

While she is in the opera's chapel immediately after the show, Christine hears a disembodied voice praising her performance. She is cast in Carlotta's place and sings her part that night to great acclaim. When Carlotta Giudicelli quits the production of "Hannibal" in anger and fear over yet another unexplained accident, Christine submits to Madame Giry's entreaties and sings for the new managers: they, the cast and even the stage hands are overcome by the beauty of her voice. She points him out to Meg excitedly but refrains from revealing herself to Raoul, convinced that he won't recognize her. When Monsieur Lefèvre announces his retirement and introduces the Opera's new management and patrons, Christine recognizes the Viscount de Chagny as her childhood sweetheart Raoul.
